How to Kosher a Faucet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Koshering a faucet is an essential part of preparing your kitchen for Passover or ensuring a kosher environment year-round. Follow this simple guide to properly kosher your faucet.

1. Thorough Cleaning
Start by thoroughly cleaning all parts of the faucet with soap and warm water. Scrub the handles, spout, and all external surfaces using a sponge or scrubber to remove any residue, grease, or food particles.

2. 24-Hour Waiting Period
If your faucet was used with non-kosher or chametz items, wait 24 hours after cleaning before proceeding to the next steps.

3. Running Hot Water
Turn on the faucet and let hot water run through it for a few minutes. This step heats the internal parts of the faucet, preparing it for the koshering process.

4. Pouring Boiling Water
Boil water in a pot or kettle. After running hot water, turn off the faucet and carefully pour the boiling water over the entire faucet, including the spout, handles, and all parts that come into contact with dishes or food. Make sure all surfaces are fully covered.

5. Special Considerations

Aerator (Faucet Filter): Replace the aerator with a new one if possible, especially for Passover. If replacement is not an option, remove it, clean it thoroughly, and then pour boiling water over it separately.

Pull-Out Hose:If your faucet has a pull-out hose, ensure that it is cleaned and koshered as well.

By following these steps, you will have a properly koshered faucet ready for use. Koshering does not have to be complicated when taken step by step. Happy koshering!

Final Note
It is always recommended to consult a rabbi to ensure you are following proper koshering procedures, especially when preparing for Passover.
