How to Kosher a Faucet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Koshering a faucet is an essential part of preparing your kitchen for Passover or ensuring a kosher environment year-round. Follow this simple guide to ensure your faucet is properly koshered.

1. Thorough Cleaning

Start by thoroughly cleaning all parts of the faucet with soap and warm water. Scrub the handles, spout, and all external surfaces with a sponge or scrubber to remove any residue, grease, or food particles.

2. 24-Hour Waiting Period

If your faucet has been used with non-kosher items or chametz, wait 24 hours after cleaning before moving on to the next steps.

3. Run Hot Water

Turn on the faucet and let hot water run through it for a few minutes. This step heats up the internal parts of the faucet, preparing it for the koshering process.

4. Pour Boiling Water

Boil water in a pot or kettle. After running hot water, turn off the faucet and carefully pour the boiling water over the entire faucet, including the spout, handles, and any parts that come into contact with utensils or food. Ensure all surfaces are fully covered.

5. Special Considerations

Aerator (Faucet Filter): Replace the aerator with a new one if possible, especially for Passover. If replacement isn’t an option, remove, clean it thoroughly, and then pour boiling water over it separately.

Pull-Out Hose: If your faucet has a pull-out hose, make sure to clean and kosher it as well.

By following these steps, you’ll have a properly koshered faucet ready for use. Koshering doesn’t have to be complicated when you take it step by step. Happy koshering!

Final Note

It’s always recommended to consult with a rabbi to ensure you are following proper koshering procedures, especially when preparing for Passover.
