A Guide to Kashering Your Sink, Strainers, and Drainers for Passover

Kashering your kitchen for Passover is an essential part of the holiday preparation, especially when it comes to items that come into contact with food throughout the year.
A sink, strainers, and drainers are often exposed to chametz (leavened products) and must be kashered properly to be used during the holiday. Here’s a step-by-step guide to kashering these essential kitchen items for Pesach.

1. Kashering Strainers and Drainers:

Strainers and drainers are frequently exposed to chametz during food preparation and cleaning. To ensure they’re kosher for Passover, these items should be cleaned thoroughly and kashered if possible.

Material Check: Before proceeding, check the material of your strainer or drainer. Only those made from heat-resistant materials like metal or certain types of heat-resistant plastics can be kashered with boiling water. If your strainer or drainer is made from materials that cannot withstand high temperatures, such as plastic or wood, it may need to be replaced for use during Pesach.

Cleaning: Begin by washing your strainer or drainer thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure to scrub every part, paying particular attention to any mesh or perforations where food particles can become trapped.

Boiling Water: After cleaning, kasher the strainer or drainer by pouring boiling water over it. The water should cover all surfaces, including the mesh and any hard-to-reach areas. You can use tongs to handle the strainer or use a kettle with a spout to pour the boiling water carefully.

Kashering the Drainer: The drainer, which holds dishes or utensils after washing, can be kashered in the same manner as strainers. Thorough cleaning followed by the pouring of boiling water will render it kosher for Passover.

2. Important Notes to Keep in Mind:

Cold Water and Non-Heat-Resistant Items: If you are unable to use boiling water or if your strainer, drainer, or sink cannot be kashered due to material limitations, it may be necessary to replace these items for Passover. Non-heat-resistant materials like plastic or wood cannot be kashered with boiling water, and using them during Pesach would not be permissible.

Consult a Rabbi: If you are uncertain about kashering any specific item in your kitchen or if you have a special situation (such as a ceramic sink or a non-traditional kitchen setup), it is always a good idea to consult a rabbi or an authority on Jewish law. They can provide specific guidance based on the materials and methods that are appropriate for your kitchen setup.

Happy Passover preparation!
